Phoenix Mountains Preserve
Piestewa Peak: Piestewa Peak (recently named for Lori Piestewa, who lost her life in the Iraq War) is one of the Valleys prominent landmarks and quite popular with area residents. Thousands of hikers enjoy miles of trails, getting away from the cities nearby crowded streets and highways. Dogs must be leashed at all times. All trails are multiuse unless posted otherwise.

History: Once used for mining and grazing, it did not become a City of Phoenix possession until 1959, when the area was annexed and later became a mountain preserve.
Elevation: Piestewa Peak reaches 2,608 feet. Elevation gain for the Summit Trail is 1,190 feet.
Geology: The metamorphic granite of the Phoenix Mountains (including Piestewa Peak and North Mountain areas) are very old, but the mountain are, geologically young, forming approximately 14 million years ago. Mercury mines were once worked in the Dreamy Draw Recreation Area.
Facilities & Reservations: Picnic ramadas, serving up to 600 are complete with electricity, drinking water, fire pits, tables, benches and nearby restrooms. Call for reservations and additional information.
No dogs or mountain biking allowed.
Trails
#1A: Perl Charles Memorial Trail
Length: 4.8 miles
Elevation: 2,200 ft. - 1,340 ft.
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Type: Multi-use trail
The Perl Charles trailhead is located on the east side of 16th Street at the Arizona Canal and is a spur off of the Maricopa County Sun Circle Trail (no parking available).
#302: Squaw Peak Circumference Trail
Length: 3.74 miles
Elevation: 2,102 ft. - 1,400 ft.
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Type: Multi-use trail except on Summit Trail
The trailhead is located at the Apache picnic area at the end of Squaw Peak Drive in Squaw Peak recreation area. Paved parking, restrooms and drinking water are available.
#220 & 220A: Dreamy Draw Nature Trail
Length: 1.5 miles #220; 1 mile #220A
Elevation: 1,580 ft. - 1,380 ft.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Type: Multi-use trail
The trailhead is located just north of the parking lot in Dreamy Draw recreation area near 19th Street and Northern Avenue. A large paved parking lot, unpaved staging area with hitching racks, horse trough, drinking water and restrooms are available.
#200 & 200A: Squaw Peak Mohave Trail
Length: .4 mile
Elevation: 1,788 ft. - 1,480 ft.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Type: Multi-use trail
The trailhead is located at the upper parking lot of the Mohave picnic area at Squaw Peak recreation area. Paved parking, drinking water and restrooms are available.
#300: Squaw Peak Summit Trail
Length: 1.2 miles
Elevation: 2,608 ft. - 1,400 ft.
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Type: Hiking trail only
The trailhead is located in the parking lot at the first driveway on the left in Squaw Peak Park. To reach Squaw Peak, turn east on Squaw Peak Drive from Lincoln Drive between 22nd and 24th streets. Paved parking, drinking water and restrooms are available.
#304: Squaw Peak Natural Trail
Length: 1.52 miles
Elevation: 1,790 ft. - 1,610 ft.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Type: Multi-use trail
The trailhead is located at the Apache picnic area at the end of Squaw Peak Drive in Squaw Peak recreation area. Paved parking, drinking water and restrooms are available.
#8: Quartz Ridge Trail
Length: 2.45 Miles
Elevation: 1,860 ft. -1,640 ft.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Type: Multi-use trail
The trailhead is located at the end of 40th Street south of Shea Boulevard at the mountain preserve. Unimproved parking for both cars and horse trailers is available.
#100: Charles M. Christiansen Memorial Trail
Length: 10.7 miles
Elevation: 2,080 ft. - 1,290 ft.
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
