Highline National Recreation Trail

Tonto National Forest

Mogollon Rim Country north of Payson

The Pine View Trail (above), part of the Highline National Recreation Trail, snakes through stands of ponderosa pine and high-country chaparral. All trails are well marked and posted . The Rim Country is one of my favorite places to hike, camp, fish and mountain bike. See Map

Located beneath the Mogollon Rim, easily accessible from Phoenix, the Highline National Recreation Trail is an awesome way to explore the Tonto National Forest. See: Convenient Day Hikes

With more than 100 miles of trail, the Highline offers convenient day hikes or backcountry pulse-pounders rated by the Forest Service as "most difficult."
Elevations range from 5,000 to 8,000 feet and climatic change varies dramatically. In winter, temperatures fluctuate from deep freeze to 80 degrees, while summer days top out in the 100s. Summer thunderstorms are frequent and dangerous.

As always, we recommend you dress in layers, hike with a companion, make others aware of your itinerary, take plenty of water (3-4 quarts per person per day) and always be mindful of wildlife.
