The Benefits of Weight Training

We are told all the
time that we must exercise more, eat less and take our vitamins to
maintain
or improve our health. What sort of diet to follow and which supplements
to take are
controversial topics. Exercise is an accepted part of the equation, but
what kind of exercise is
often debated. The benefits of aerobic exercise on the cardiovascular
system and calorie
burning have been well documented and often quoted. The benefits of
weight training on the
body have been equally as well documented but unfortunately much less
quoted.
Weight training is a form of exercise that early on was reserved for
strength athletes and
bodybuilders. The general public didn't make a wholesale buy in until
the 1980s. At this time
people began to flock to fitness centers and gyms to attain the newly
desired muscular physique.
More heavily muscled movie and television stars began to shift the
societal trend toward
muscular acceptance. With this new shift in the nation's focus studies
began to pop up on the
benefits of weight training. Many effects of weight training beyond just
improving the physique
were found.
Weight training has been shown to increase bone density. The added
stress on the bones and
joints leads to more calcium shuffled to bone growth, increasing
density. This helps to decrease
the chances of fractures and puts off the onset of osteoporosis and
other bone density diseases.
This increase in bone health also helps with the production of immune
system infection fighters,
since they are produced in the marrow of the bones.
Improved metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, as well as many
essential vitamins
and minerals, is another benefit of weight training. The body's need for
energy and repair
components forces the body to metabolize nutrients better and make
better use of the food we
eat. This also leads to better health along the entire gastrointestinal
tract.
Longer lasting fat loss is one of the important benefits that many
overlook. The growth of lean
muscle tissue increases the rate of calorie burn during rest and during
activity. Muscles require
more calories to maintain and function than fat stores. The fat loss
benefit of adding just three
pounds of muscle is impressive. Those three pounds of muscle could lead
to a loss of 31.4
pounds of body fat over a the span of a year, and because this loss
comes at your current
caloric intake it will be a permanent loss. The added muscle will also
add shape to the body
and many people find that they achieve their desired look much quicker
with weight training
combined with a sensible diet.
The added strength from weight training makes day to day activities
easier. This leads to more
energy because the muscles do not have to work as hard to move the body
around. More
productivity in your daily tasks is another carry-over benefit. The
extra strength can be used to
try new activities or do things you haven't done for a while.
Increased flexibility is a little known benefit of weight training. If
exercises are done through a
full range of motion flexibility is bound to improve. The stretch phase
of the exercise is done
against resistance which often gently forces the muscle to stretch a
little farther. A healthier
muscle stretches better.
All of these benefits lead to a healthier appearance and a younger feel.
Along with the structural
benefits, the additional release of hormones leads to a healthier
endocrine system. The body's
internal functions will have to regulate the additional needs of the
newly built muscles. This leads
to a better functional organ and nervous system.

Why Proper Exercise
Is Important

Proper exercise is
extremely important to a healthy, well-balanced body. So many people
look specifically at changing their diet to get more fit, but that is
only half the battle. In order to get the maximum benefits from a
healthier eating lifestyle, a healthier exercise lifestyle needs to be
developed and followed, as well.
Some of the
benefits of proper exercise are:
The Benefits of Aerobic Exercise
- Strengthens
and builds up our heart muscle and our bones.
- Lessens
our body’s fat store because they are being used to fuel our activity
level.
- Increases
the level of oxygen to our lungs and bloodstream. This occurs because,
during aerobic exercise, we breathe more deeply. The more oxygen that
reaches the lungs, the more oxygen that can get into our blood. (Since
oxygen is our most important nutrient, this is a great benefit!)
- We
will not become breathless when doing activities like climbing stairs or
walking around a shopping center. Doing aerobic exercise conditions the
lungs so they are better able to handle everyday activity.
- Increases
our immunity to disease, since it helps to drain the fluids from and
circulate the fluids properly in the lymphatic system.
- Improves
the endurance level of our cardiovascular system.
- Helps
to detoxify the skin due to the promotion of sweating.
- Improves
the flexibility and strength of our muscles throughout the body.
- Decreases
our risk for developing heart disease.
- Lowers
the body's total cholesterol level while increasing what is called “good
cholesterol,” or HDL.
- Decreases
our blood pressure.
- Improves
the overall tone of our body. Aerobic exercise may increase the size of
your muscles, your strength level, and your flexibility level while you
are burning away unwanted fat.
- May
help alleviate stress and improve our overall mood, making us more
productive in our everyday lives.
Aerobic exercise is
a critical element for good health. However, you cannot stop there. For
a well-rounded and proper exercise regime, you need to include some
strength training activities, too.
The Benefits of Strength Training
Exercise
- Increases
our body’s metabolism.
- Helps
to intensify our body’s fat weight loss.
- Gives
our body greater muscle strength, muscle tone and firmness.
- Helps
to develop our tendon and ligament strength.
- Increases
our body’s bone density and strength.
- Boosts
our body’s stamina, energy and endurance.
- Helps
increase our body’s coordination and balance.
- Helps
improve our overall mood and attitude.
- Enhances
our mental functions.
When you combine
these two types of activity with stretching, you are working toward a
proper exercise program. This proper exercise will give you significant
weight loss and muscle toning results!
With aerobic
exercise, you want to warm up with stretching or light walking before
you build up to the higher intensity activities. After a set amount of
time, you want to cool down, again with stretching or light walking.
This will allow your body to do easy transitions from inactivity to
activity.
With weight
training exercise, it is also critical that you do a period of warm up
and cool down activity. To warm up, do simple aerobic exercise for 10
minutes or so, as it will increase the blood flow to your muscles. Doing
these warm up and cool down activities will help reduce the amount of
soreness you experience after exercise and well as preventing strains
and injuries.
Proper exercise
helps our bodies in so many ways! The increased activity raises our
metabolism, which allows our bodies to burn fat instead of storing it.
This will help keep weight under control, if the activity level is
maintained. Get up and keep moving to see realize the benefits for
yourself.
