Ballantine Trail
Tonto National Forest
On the way to Payson
Overview: The western section is great Sonoran Desert. The hike through Ballantine Canyon, with its interesting rock formations, is prime riparian habitat. Upon leaving Ballantine Canyon, you skirt the east side of Pine Mountain, at an elevation of 5,800 feet, before dropping down to the Cline Trailhead.
Trailhead (TH): The trailhead is on the east side of SR 87 (the Beeline Hwy.), approximately 7 miles north of Four Peaks Rd.

Trail: TR 283.
Length: 10 miles.
Rating: Most difficult. Sections of trail are vague; pay strict attention.
Highlights: Awesome desert, riparian habitat, the Ballantine Canyon and splendid views from Pine Mountain.
Elevation change: 3,280 feet.
Season: Year-round, but hot in summer.
